Hawaii Police Department officers are pursuing a white pickup truck in the Kailua-Kona area after the driver failed to stop for officers when they attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation in Hilo.

Officers have been following the vehicle since the attempted stop around 4:30 p.m. in Hilo, according to the Hawaii Police Department. It has moved through the Hamakua, South Kohala and North Kona districts. The vehicle was last headed southbound on Alii Drive after crossing through town.

Lt. Daniel Malakar confirmed the pursuit, but said police are “watching” rather than chasing the vehicle. He said the pursuit has been relatively slow speed.

He emphasized that officers will not put the public in “any jeopardy” during the event.
